Long before we had calendars on our phones, the moon was the clock. Farmers planted by it. Healers harvested by it. Herbalists believed — and many still do — that the phase of the moon when you pick, prepare, or use a plant changes how it works.
This isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. The moon moves oceans. It influences the rise and fall of sap in trees, the germination of seeds, and the moisture content of soil. If it can pull tides across the planet, the idea that it affects the plants growing in that soil isn’t mystical thinking — it’s observation passed down through centuries of people paying very close attention to the natural world.
Here’s the basic framework that lunar herbalism works from:
New Moon — a time for setting intentions and starting new projects. In herbal practice, this is when you plant seeds, begin new remedies, or set goals for your health and spiritual practice. The energy is quiet and inward.
Waxing Moon — the moon is growing, and so is the energy. This is the time to nurture what you’ve started. Herbalists use this phase for preparations meant to build, strengthen, or attract — tonics, nourishing teas, and remedies designed to increase vitality.
Full Moon — peak energy. Herbs harvested during the full moon are believed to be at their most potent. This is the time for gathering, for charging herbal preparations, and for rituals of abundance and gratitude. Many practitioners make moon water during this phase — simply leaving water under the full moon overnight to absorb its energy.
Waning Moon — the moon is releasing, and this phase is about letting go. Herbalists use this time for preparations meant to cleanse, detoxify, banish, and release. Purification teas, cleansing rituals, and remedies designed to remove what no longer serves you.
Dark Moon — the brief pause before the cycle begins again. A time for rest, reflection, and going inward. Not a time for harvesting or preparing — a time for stillness.
This section of the Unearthly Apothecary will explore these connections in depth as it grows — specific herbs aligned with each moon phase, seasonal rituals tied to the lunar calendar, and practical ways to bring lunar awareness into your herbal practice whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or someone who just looked up at the moon tonight and felt something.
The plants and the moon have been in conversation for longer than any of us have been alive. All we have to do is listen.
Follow along as this section grows. New moon phase guides and seasonal ritual posts are coming soon.
